Pediatric Cardiac Capacity Building Medical Mission performed 39 cardiac interventions and children heart surgeries during last 4 days:
A 14-member medical mission performed 31 interventions & 8 complex cardiac surgeries at Children Hospital and Institute of Child Health Lahore and Faisalabad Institute of Cardiology over the last 4 days. This was told by the dean Children Hospital Prof Masood Sadiq in a medical briefing and Prof. Anjum Jalal at Faisalabad. The CEO of the Pakistan Children’s Heart Foundation Mr. Farhan Ahmad briefed that the purpose of the pediatric medical mission is capacity building for local team and working on long term Host & Guest relation between world renowned Pediatric Cardiac Surgeons, Interventional Cardiologist and their counter parts in Pakistan.
The key feature has been Nikaidoh Procedure for the Correction of Transposition of the Great Arteries, Ventricular Septal Defect and Pulmonary Stenosis and the child was extubated within 12 hours and doing fine at Faisalabad. The use of ECMO (Extracorporeal membrane Oxygenation) on a child after surgery whose heart stopped working. This has been used for the first time in any public sector hospital in Pakistan. This mission is visiting Pakistan organized in collaboration with Pakistan Children’s Heart Foundation.
The medical mission includes prestigious Cardiac surgeons, Cardiologists, Intensivists, anaesthesiologists, nurses, respiratory therapists and technicians from different countries mainly Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Canada and USA. Nationalities.
Few of the members include Dr. Salahuddin Ahmad, Chief of Cardiac Surgery having 20 years of experience in his career and right now he is working in Hamad Medical Qatar since 2012. Dr. Younes Boudjemline, Paediatric Cardiologist & Director of the Catheterization Laboratories, Paediatric Cardiology, in Sidra Medicine Qatar having 15 years of experience in career in Paris France. Dr. Arif Hussain working as Paediatric Cardiologist in IWK Children Hospital & Associate Professor of Paediatrics Dalhousie University Canada serving from last 30 years. Dr. Saif Ur Rehman, Peads Cardiac Anaesthesiologist in King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Director Morbidity and Mortality conference in Department of Anaesthesiology, University of Missouri USA having 14 years of experience in career. Ms. Julianne Koehler Metcalf, Clinical Educator, PICU currently working in Sidra Medical Centre Qatar and served in different institutions as Nurse Educator, Cardiac Intensive Care and Heart Institute in USA. Dr. Babur Raffique is an Associate Professor of Anaesthesiology and started his career in 2004 as assistant Professor and now serving in UT Health McGovern Medical School USA.
The international team was warmly welcomed by the local team of professionals including Prof. Masood Sadiq, Dean Children’s Hospital, Dr. Asim Khan, Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon, Dr. Salman Shah, Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon, Dr. Najam Hayder, Pediatric Cardiologist in Lahore & Prof. Anjum Jalal Executive Director, FIC, Dr. Zaigham Rasul & Dr. Abdul Razzaq Mughal, Pediatric Cardiologist at Faisalabad.
Mission did not charge any money for the visit and was here on humanitarian grounds. The local arrangements were done by Pakistan Children’s Heart Foundation Pakistan and PCHF North America in collaboration with Children Hospital in Lahore and Faisalabad institute of Cardiology at Faisalabad.
Alhamdolillah, after months and months of efforts on convincing local and the international team, this mission has been, a great success and we would like to continue this for the other public & private hospital as the shortage of manpower for specialized health care can only be taken care by such missions. This was stated by Dr. Saif Rehman the chief of Medical Mission. Currently there are less than 10 Pediatric Cardiac Surgeons and less than 30 Cardiologists working in 8 public & private hospitals where more than 50,000 kids are born every year with Congenital Heart Defect in Pakistan.
