Nabiha walked into the OPD, timid with curious green eyes. Her lips and nails were blue and upon examination, it was discovered that she was not growing according to her age. At just 2 years old, her parents were worried if she would be able to continue her life, like other healthy children. Her echo revealed the diagnosis of Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). TOF is a heart defect that occurs at birth. It is a complex, yet common, a condition in Pakistan. Without surgical intervention, patients have a 1-year survival rate of 66%, 49% after 2 years, and only 10–15% after more than 20 years. Nabiha may have been part of the more fortunate 51%, but the staggering cost of the surgery had her parents thinking otherwise.
PCHF assisted Nabiha’s parents to overcome their fears. On 15/05/2019, under Dr. Asim Khan, she successfully underwent a CT angiography. After this, total corrective surgery was successfully performed. With no complications, Nabiha was released from the hospital after 6 days.
Her mother reported a happy and active girl on her follow up. PCHF is delighted to have been able to play a role in this girl’s healthy future.
