This is the #SuccessStory of an 8-year-old #CHDWarrior, Jannat. She was diagnosed with a Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) called Tetralogy Of Fallot #TOF, in which four related heart defects change the way blood flows to the lungs and through the heart. In most cases, too little blood goes to the lungs.

Jannat and her family live in Jhang, located in the central portion of Punjab near river Chenab. Being a historical city that once flourished because of its commerce and trade, the treatment needed to save Jannat’s life was unavailable there.

Her parents initially took her to a doctor who they told about Jannat’s recurrent fevers. Previously, they used to treat her by just giving medicine. However, following a thorough check-up, this doctor told them that Jannat had CHD and that they had to take her to Lahore for further check-ups.

They met Dr. Salman Shah, an American Board Certified Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon, in Lahore and he informed them about the procedure that Jannat needed to go through, a TOF repair. This is relatively expensive and Jannat’s father found it unaffordable.

He works as a labourer and supports his entire family, which includes his wife and 4 children, all by himself. He was desperate for financial support. Dr. Shah, who is also a Medical Advisory Board Member at Pakistan Children’s Heart Foundation (PCHF), referred them to us and that’s where we stepped in.

We have funded over 3200 child heart surgeries at a total cost of more than PKR 1.2 billion. Our vast experience and phenomenal donor base make us amongst the best at what we do, which is saving lives of deserving children born with CHD, the world’s most common birth defect.

When Jannat’s family brought her to us we assured them of doing our absolute best to help her defeat CHD. Following an efficient patient registration process and consultations, her surgery was scheduled at our Child Heart Center inside the University of Lahore Teaching Hospital (ULTH).

Dr. Shah was to carry out the complex surgery himself, with a brilliant team of healthcare professionals alongside him. With the availability of world-class medical facilities as well, we went in fully prepared to help Jannat, and her family as well.

After the tremendously difficult and intricate heart surgery which lasted for a few hours was complete, we were delighted beyond measure to inform Jannat’s parents that it was a resounding success! We had helped ensure that Jannat now had a second chance at life.

Jannat’s loved ones, especially her parents, thanked us from the bottom of their hearts for saving her life. They were so happy with their experience at PCHF that they felt inspired to help their daughter become a doctor, so that she can also help save lives when she grows up.

For CHD affected families, no matter how hard things get, no matter how impossible things may seem, we are here for you. Our goal is to ensure that not a single child suffering from CHD in Pakistan remains untreated.

Legendary Pakistani cricketer, Misbah Ul Haq, is also alongside us on our journey to conquering CHD in Pakistan, by helping build the nation’s first dedicated, state-of-the-art Children’s Heart Hospital & Research Institute (CHHRI), as a PCHF Board Member.
